Women read this! Here's some advice I read for helping women advance at work. Because apparently we're pretty even-stevens from kindergarten all the way through college and entry level jobs with the boys but then something happens. This from www.careerjournal.com (where you can find the whole article):
When it comes to landing a corner office or executive title, what counts a lot more than conscientiousness is daring, assertiveness and the ability to promote oneself - all qualities men more typically demonstrate.
So the advice here is ask for what you think you deserve, negotiate hard, be daring, promote yourself, and don't back down.

If you're going to look for a new job soon, start your networking now. I'm telling you, recruiters like to go the easy route, and that's with referrals, which are often good hires too. Now's the time to see if Jenny wants to have lunch or send Mark a funny joke you found online. "Prime the pump" now so you can hit them up for some job search help when you're ready, and they'll be more than happy to oblige.

Saw this tip on a website: Everyone has an impulse to be modest. But, an interview is no time to downplay your achievements. Before going into an interview, it's important to uncover your "Wow" factors. Reflect on your academic and professional career and ask yourself: "What specific accomplishments am I most proud of?" An interview is NOT the time to be humble or shy.
